Inmate Strangles & Kills Officer With Handcuffs After Murdering His Girlfriend At Daycare
In a shocking incident that has left the Indianapolis law enforcement community and citizens reeling, new court records reveal gruesome details of an inmate’s murder of a Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy during a daring escape attempt. Deputy John Durm, a beloved 38-year-old law enforcement veteran, fell victim to Orlando Mitchell’s brutal attack. Mitchell choked Durm using the chain of his handcuffs, marking a tragic end for the devoted deputy and father of four.
The fatal attack took place within the guarded entryway of the Adult Detention Center on the city’s south side. Mitchell, who was returning from a hospital visit, allegedly launched the deadly assault as Durm opened the rear door of their transport vehicle. The Indianapolis police have classified the attack as an “intentional act of homicide,” casting a cloud of grief and anger over the city and the law enforcement community.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Mitchell, using the opportunity provided by Durm to open the rear door of the vehicle, managed to open the inner door. The affidavit chillingly described how Mitchell wrapped his hands around Durm’s head and neck. Despite a desperate struggle, Durm could not free himself from the chain Mitchell used to choke him. Mitchell maintained his grip on Durm’s neck until the deputy was motionless.
Mitchell’s audacious escape did not end there. After the horrific act, he used Durm’s handcuff key to free himself. He then commandeered the van, crashing through the detention center’s gate, only to be apprehended by other deputies after a short drive that ended in a crash.
Already incarcerated for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Krystal Walton, Mitchell now faces additional charges relating to Deputy Durm’s tragic death. Walton’s tragic story adds another layer of complexity to this case, underscoring the harrowing domestic violence she endured at Mitchell’s hands. Her fears of Mitchell hunting her down proved tragically prophetic when Mitchell confronted and fatally shot her outside a daycare center in 2022.
The Mitchell case highlights the persistent threat of domestic violence and its destructive impacts on victims and their families. It also serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily, even from those already behind bars. As the city mourns the loss of Deputy Durm, the ongoing investigation promises to bring justice for Durm’s grieving family and the community he selflessly served. The case stands as a somber testament to the constant risks law enforcement officers face and the sacrifices they make to ensure public safety.
